Located on the eastern seaboard of the island, Punta Cana is the top tourist destination in the Dominican Republic. It is on the land where the shallow Caribbean Sea meets the dark Atlantic Ocean. The area is world-famous with its powder white sand, bright clear water and miles of coconut palm trees. Coincidentally the name Punta Cana refers to the abundance of the one particular palm tree.
There are ten beaches in the area of Punta Cana. The resort is on the stretch of coast including also Cabeza de Toro, Playa Blanca, Bávaro, Arena Gorda, Macao, Uvero Alto and El Cortecito beaches. The majority of hotels are located near the Punta Cana and Bávaro beach. The less crowded is Uvero Alto which is located north to Punta Cana.
One of the biggest advantages of Punta Cana is that this region has the most consistent weather compared to other places in Dominican Republic. For example, it often rains even in the “dry season” in the areas of Las Terrenas and Las Galerras. The combination of a tourist friendly climate and warm turqoise waters attracts millions of tourists in the luxurious resort of Punta Cana.
The majority of the amazing places on the East coast of the Dominican Republic feature high-end attractions in their surroundings, ranging from family-friendly to adults-only.
What To Do in Punta Cana
Swim with dolphins and sharks
The main highlight of the Cabeza de Toro is the Marine National park. There are two facilities – the Marinarium and the Dolphin Explorer Park where you can swim with the greatest underwater inhabitants of the Caribbean Sea.
Dolphin Explorer provides unique experience with the marine mammals that are considered to be nature’s marvels. The game park offers programs even for non-swimmers. You can interact and swim with dolphins in their natural environment. This tour includes half an hour time with the dolphins. In fact, there is one mammal per group of 12-20 persons so, you will be able to interact with the dolphin for up to 2 minutes. For more adventurous tourists who are looking for a more extreme experience, there is an extended program including swim with dolphins, seals as well as snorkel around sharks and sting rays. This is the most expensive version of the excursion coasting USD 260.
The snorkel tour is in a safe natural aquarium with sleeping nurse sharks. Since these creatures are nocturnal animals, you can see them lying inactive on the bottom of the sea.
The Marinarium is a home of stingrays, sea lions, and sharks. The beautiful natural setting is recognized as a hot spot for eco-tourism and adventure excursions.
Caribbean Sea Cruises
This is a sail tour to discover the beauties of Sanctuary Cabeza de Toro and Punta Cana’s coastline. During your journey you can have fun, dance or just relax. In a natural swimming pool in Caribbean Sea, you can swim and snorkel with sharks, rays, and fur seals. Some cruises include reef snorkel.
The coral reef which is very close to the shore, is a popular scuba diving destination. It features rich coral colonies and fully-developed spur and groove formations. Around Punta Cana you can explore more than 20 different coral species.
The ocean depth around the reef reaches 50 feet. There is a good chance to see nurse sharks and rays. Still, the most common species encountered are surgeonfish, parrotfish, snapper, grouper, butterflyfish and angelfish.
Deep Sea Fishing
A deep sea fishing tour could be the time of your life or a nightmare! You can start the 4-hour journey in hopes of catching the big fish but there is a chance for you to comeback without catching anything. Moreover, just minutes after leaving the shore and passing through the reef, fisherman often experience large threatening waves. Instead of enjoying fishing, many tourists feel sick. That was our experience during one of our vacations in Punta Cana. Luckily, the company that organized the tour did not allow us to book the excursion for our 5-year old child.
It is good to know that unlike the deep sea fishing tours in Southern Thailand, the excursions around Punta Cana are organized in very rough waters so people may feel physically sick. The boat never stops and this is an experience recommended only for passionate fishermen.
